The Bodywork Services I Offer

Here’s what you can enjoy when you work with me -- either on a massage table, or floating in warm water: •Deeply relaxing massage. •Therapeutic bodywork to ease your pain and restore your body’s healthy function. •Information and practices to help you live more comfortably in your body. •Instruction on how to massage yourself and others. In each session, we can focus on any one of these objectives, or combine several or all of them -- depending on the length of the session, and your needs and intentions.
I can help you relax:
Massage is great for relaxation. It calms the breathing and the nervous system, helps to relieve stress and muscle tension, increases circulation throughout the body, supports digestion and elimination, moves lymph, and helps flush toxins out of the body. It can quiet your mind, reduce your pain, increase your suppleness and flexibility, help you sleep better, and improve your mood and outlook on life. It also just plain feels great!
I can offer you a relaxing massage on a comfortable massage table, or floating in warm water. On a table, you may have your massage with your clothes on or off, and with or without oil or lotion on your skin. And either place, you may choose a touch that’s as gentle or as firm as you prefer.
I can help ease your pain and restore your body’s healthy function:
I love working with injuries and chronic conditions. My experience is that good bodywork can bring significant relief to many of the soft-tissue issues that Western medicine labels with diagnoses and prognoses of “nothing you can do about it”. I can’t, of course, make any promises; but I have helped a lot people find at least some relief from a wide variety of conditions:

My experience is that good bodywork can bring significant relief to many of the soft-tissue issues that Western medicine labels with diagnoses and prognoses of “nothing you can do about it”. I can’t, of course, make any promises; but I have helped a lot people find at least some relief from a wide variety of conditions:
•chronic pain, anywhere in the body
•”holding on” from old injuries •post-surgical recovery •scars and adhesions •acute pain from recent trauma •sports-related injuries •whiplash •TMJ •headaches •sleeplessness •tinnitus •sciatica •tendonitis •bursitis •repetitive motion injuries •carpal tunnel syndrome •tennis elbow •mouse hand •uneven leg lengths •pelvic tilts •muscular imbalances •certain neurological conditions |
The deeper bodywork required to treat many of these conditions goes beyond simple feel-good massage. Most of these conditions require that I have direct access to your skin (so we can’t do it with your clothes on), and the sensations can sometimes be painful. If you want to address issues such as these, I will work with you to make sure that the treatment always stays within your comfort zone.
I can help you live more comfortably in your body:
How to breathe right. How to drink, eat, rest, and exercise optimally. How to move freely, efficiently, and powerfully. How to use touch -- of yourself and others -- for wellbeing. How to quiet your mind. How to engage with and manage the energy inside and around you...
Most of us are never really taught these things -- the simple, basic practices of being healthy and conscious in a human body. If you’d like, I can incorporate self-care guidance into our massage session; or we can devote an entire session to helping you learn how to feel more at home in your skin.
And if you enjoy -- and learn by -- reading about these things, you might appreciate my book, Embodiment.

I can teach you how to massage yourself and others:

Learning to massage yourself with skill and finesse is a great way take better care of your body. Many of the little aches and pains that result from our daily activities -- sitting for too long, repetitive motions, bad posture, bursts of activity without warming up... -- can easily be addressed with the touch of your own hands. I'll show you how easy it can be to squeeze, wring, stroke and jiggle your way to feeling better.
Teaching people to massage each other is also one of my favorite things to do -- and I especially love working with couples. At Harbin, couples come in for an hour-and-a-half, or two hours, and each gets a chance to learn more about giving the kind of bodywork that their partner wants and enjoys most. Usually, one person wants their partner to learn to touch them more firmly, while the other wants their partner to learn a gentler, more present touch. Sometimes, it's just about teaching each person specific techniques for helping their partner's tight shoulders let go, or their sore back, aching head, or tired feet. No matter what your specific intentions may be, and the relationship and dynamic between you, a session of bodywork instruction for couples will give each of you specific skills for helping your beloved's body relax, and give you both better tools for listening to each other and asking for what you want.
